The First Step
Public, private and applied sciences do not behave the same way. The split that really decides your list is language, because most master's programmes have English options and most bachelor's do not.

Everything I learned moving from India to Austria: universities, visas, money, jobs and surviving the German-speaking world.

Explore Austrian universities, master’s programmes, admission requirements, tuition fees, deadlines and everything you need to make the right choice.
There is a big difference between the money you need to prove for your residence permit and what you will actually spend each month. See the real costs of studying and living in Austria, plus scholarships and funding options that can help.
You are not applying for a simple visa. You are applying for the Aufenthaltsbewilligung Student. Two things run in parallel and both take months: getting an appointment slot, and getting the form exactly right.
OeAD dorms are predictable, a Wohngemeinschaft is cheaper and more social, and the private market is where the scams are. Then register your address and collect the Meldezettel, which unlocks nearly everything else.

The hard part of a motivation letter is the empty page, not the writing. You now have something to react to instead, which is a much easier problem.

This is the short one. Name the programme, introduce yourself in two sentences, and make the enclosure list match what you actually attach. That last part is where most applications slip.

From winter semester 2026/27, if you finished your education in India, Pakistan or Bangladesh, you have to pass an in person test at a VFS Global centre before you can even apply to a growing list of Austrian universities. It costs around 100 euros (around 160 at the University of Vienna, with a German placement test), the one published pass mark is 50 percent and the result goes straight to the university.
What it is and how to prepareFor most master's programmes in the big cities, no. English-taught options exist and admission does not require German. Day to day is a different question, and it gets harder the smaller the city.
Public universities charge non EU students a modest fee per semester. The larger number is living costs, and the money you must prove you hold for the residence permit is separate again.
The full cost breakdownVery often it is documents rather than grades. Depending on where your degree was issued, it may need an apostille or full diplomatic legalization before an admissions office will accept it.
What went wrong in my case60 ECTS is one full year of full-time study. So work out what share of your year a course was, and price that share at 60. Austria also fixes one credit at 25 hours of work.
Use the ECTS calculatorEarlier than feels reasonable. Document legalization moves at the speed of your home country's offices, and permit appointment slots can be booked out for months.
Booking an appointmentAs a non EU student what you are allowed to do is tied to your residence permit rather than to your contract. Check your own permit before you agree to anything.
